Antarctica...... takes my breath away. I simply cannot imagine anywhere so perfect, in its unspoilt beauty. Miles and miles of pure, unending snow. The southern lights glittering away in the sky. It is the greatest paradise on this planet, and im gonna go there. Sometimes, Antarctica feels like all I have to live for. |

Can u imagine yourself there? Standing there, looking around you. Miles and miles of untainted whiteness, with only you. There you could be totally alone. Alone from everything, all the troubles and worries of everyday life. When I tell most people about my dream, the most common reaction is "It'll be cold". Well, duh! I dont care about the cold, it is that that gives Antarctica it's ethereal beauty. And besides, you can get equipment to protect yourself. Coats, and tents, and stuff. Itll be worth any expense, any physical discomfort. The big problem with an Antarctic trek is the physical stresses that your body is put under. I think I will need a LOT of training before im ready for that. So, first, im gonna take the wimps way out. With an Antarctic cruise.
However, an Antartic Cruise is..... well.... VERY expensive!!! THe lowest sort of prices that I can find is around £4000, and that is on a grotty little ship. The really nice looking ships (such as my current favourite, the "World Discoverer", flagship of Society Expeditions) Is about £7000. Add flights out, and alcohol, and the total price will be more like £10000!!! It'll be worth it though. |

Interesting Antarctica Facts The Ross Ice Shelf is equal in area to France. Entombed under Antarctica's ice are are mountains, hundred mile long lakes, and deep troughs. (Just imagine that for a second. Antarctica would look completely different, without all the ice) Antarctica has more ice and snow than all the glaciers and snow fields of the rest of the world combined. Fifty-one U.S. aircraft have been lost in Antarctica since 1946 (Theyre still out there, somewhere. That shows how big Antarctica really is, cos you know what americans are like about recovering their property!) The average annual precipitation in the interior of Antarctica is less than 2 inches, drier than the Sahara desert. No rain has fallen in the Dry Valleys in approximately a million years and the occasional traces of snow are quickly blown away. When Antarctica freezes in the winter the ice cover doubles the area of the continent, extending it to approximately 30 million square miles. Even in summer, alnmost the entire continent is covered by ice with an average thickness of almost a mile. (Thats a DAMN lot of ice!) The ice sheet at the South Pole is nearly two miles thick and is constantly shifting, carrying the facilities along with it at a rate of about 30 feet per year. If completely melted, the present Antarctic ice sheet houses enough water to raise the global sea level by 200 feet.
